Caring For and Storing Organic Objects: A Spring MAM Collections Housing Workshop

9:00 AM:  Registration and coffee

9:15 AM: Introductions

9:30:  Ron Harvey, Object Conservator, (Tuckerbrook Conservation,

Lincolnville, ME) will present a program outlining the special concerns and needs of organic and composite objects and how they should be cared for and stored.  Discussion will include the requirements of objects as varied as a feather fan and leather covered trunks and a mounted fish and wooden tools. He will address the needs of objects made of composite materials and the needs of similar groups of small collections, such as small animal bone fragments and larger items such as coverlets and woolen holed rugs.

11:00 AM: Morning break

11:15AM:

Harveywill demonstrate solutions for the storing and preserving organic historic and scientific objects.

12:15 PM: Lunch and Door Prize Drawing

12:45 PM: Ron Harvey will guide workshop participants in analyzing a diverse group of objects to determine how to best preserve them and demonstrate some preservation techniques. This will include examining the issues that effect the preservation of the organic materials and when professional treatments are needed. He will also address health issues related to some preserved organic materials.

1:45 PM -. Participants’ Question and Answer/Discussion - Participants are encouraged to bring photograph(s) of organic or composite objects in their collections. Ron Harvey will offer comments and advice on how to best preserve and house them.

       

2:30 PM – (Evaluations collected.) Tours of parts of the

L.C. Bates Museumto see treatment and care of some organic materials. 

This workshop is supported in part by the a CPS Grant From the Institute of Museum and Library Services

The workshop will begin in the Good Will-Hinckley Visitors Center, the

building with the blue roof, one Campus entrance north of the Museum off RT.210.

Please bring a sack lunch. Drinks and morning muffins will be provided.
