Archival Basics

This basic archival workshop will give attendees a holistic understanding of collections care by discussing fundamentals of archives, including governance, preservation, arrangement and description, storage, access and outreach. Specific examples will illustrate key points and a list of resources will be provided. 

Colby Special Collections will provide coffee, tea, and cookies.


Schedule

2 - 3:10: Part 1 of the workshop, including Q&A on broad topics like governance, preservation, arrangement, and description

3:10 - 3:30: Snacks

3:30 - 4:30: Part 2 of the workshop including Q&A on more granular topics like storage, access, and outreach

4:30 - 5:00: Optional page turning of John James Audubon's The Birds of America in Special Collections

5 PM: MAM social mixer in at the Silver Street Tavern (2 Silver St) in downtown Waterville


Your Presenter


This workshop is presented by Pat Burdick, Assistant Director of Colby College Special Collections. Pat has been working with Colby's rare and unique materials for over 20 years. She received her MLS degree with an archival concentration from Simmons College and continues to serve as an archival consultant and workshop presenter throughout the state of Maine. Before finding her way to the world of archives, she completed a masters program in Mechanical Engineering at Lehigh and Georgia Tech, working as a research engineer at MIT. She lives on North Pond in the Belgrade Lakes area with her covivant, artist Kevin James, and three lovely felines. She is a Master Gardener and helps to maintain the gardens at Skowhegan History House and the Fairview Grange in Smithfield as part of her yearly community service. 


The Venue

The Robinson Memorial Room is located in Special Collections at Miller Library on the Colby College Campus in Waterville.  View the campus map.

Parking available in the Roberts Parking Lot, which is a short walk to the Miller Library.

This venue is wheelchair accessible.

The fee for members is $25.  Non-members pay $40.

The size of the workshop space limits registration to 25 participants - register early to reserve your space!
