Join our free, virtual Speaker Series event on Wednesday, March 2nd at 12:30 pm ET!

Free speech around the world today is in retreat. Authoritarian and nationalist figures from Narendra Modi in India to Viktor Orbán in Hungary are silencing dissenting voices in an effort to entrench power.

Even in democracies, where it is hailed as the “first freedom” and a bedrock democratic value, the free speech debate is weaponized by the political left and right, as different groups aim to curtail it on college campuses, in classrooms, and on digital platforms — undermining the very culture of tolerance and open-mindedness on which this freedom ultimately depends.

Join author Jacob Mchangama for a conversation on the global history of free speech, from the ancient world to today. Register at https://firstamendmentmuseum.org/event/free-speech-a-history-from-socrates-to-social-media/

Apologies for multiple postings, but we need as many responses as possible.

At the 2020 Maine Archives and Manuscripts conference, a session of the same title presented current projects to create access to manuscript collections at multiple repositories. Can Maine build such a system which will cater to the different resources of repositories at historical societies, public libraries, academic institutions, and government agencies?

A Maine union manuscript catalog would benefit both users and repositories. The very fact that 23 states have created shared systems proves their value.

The Maine Union Catalog Survey seeks information on repositories in Maine (where, type), existing access systems, and what description elements they want in a shared system. Using this data, we can build a shared access system that will serve repositories as they exist now.

Please fill out the survey form below. It only takes 5 minutes. If you have trouble accessing google form, please contact susie.bock@maine.edu.

Join Les Fossel of Old House Restoration, Jonathan Hall of Maine Preservation, and the Greenhorns team for a weekend intensive workshop to learn traditional skills and methods of historic preservation in Pembroke, ME. Washington County has some of the finest 18th and 19th century architecture on the Atlantic seaboard, much of it imperiled by our cold winters, shrinking population and thin economic base. The civic buildings, churches and halls of Downeast were built during the age of sail, lumber, ship building and early industrial development of our rivers. Now the rivers are being restored—but what about the buildings! There is a critical need for farmers and skilled tradespersons in Washington County. With the rest of the Atlantic coast increasingly out of reach, this is a place where a person willing to swing a hammer can actually get some equity going! This is the topic of a strategic session on historic preservation, led by Les, a tireless advocate of the practice and one of New England's foremost preservation contractors. Join us for walkabouts, networking lunches, and skill-building hands-on workshops as we contend with the reality all around us, including the 1896-built Oddfellows Hall, now "Reversing Hall", that is the home of Greenhorns. We will visit other great buildings, talk about triage and approaches, review the existing learning opportunities, and bust out the hammers ourselves. Meals provided by Smithereen Farm, donations appreciated. For more information contact development@greenhorns.org or 603 381 1115. Sign up here
